Christmas in Spearfish

by Victoria Kinkler

Winter is a special time in the Black Hills, and holiday spirit abounds in Spearfish.

Spearfish Canyon is pristine.  Perfect for a cruise through on a snowmobile, or snowshoes.
Tangy gingerbread wafts out from Blackbird Espresso, and the fireplace on Hudson and Main is roaring.  The street glistens with headlights and blinking string lights.

Madison skating rink in the city park provides a charming bring your own skates experience.  Deer can be seen pawing through the snow of surrounding hills.

The annual Holidazzle Parade of Lights and chili feed are a must see, as well as the Holiday High Tea at the Matthews Opera House is the perfect opportunity to warm up while Christmas shopping. The Festival of Trees  also provides a great opportunity to get in the spirit of giving and gaze at dozens of elaborate trees and wreaths.

History buffs should also check out the story behind the historic Meier Passion Play.  And why not make a day of it?  You can park by the Passion Play and take a short walk to historic Thoen Stone, from where you can see Spearfish in its entirety.

Which is your must-do holiday tradition?
