Winter Art Show at The Matthews Opera House

Local artists had the opportunity to show off their work at the 34th Annual Winter Art Show. Over 100 pieces were on display at the Matthews Opera House during the four day show. This show is unique in that it allows artists of all ages to have their work judged. Categories consisted of: Professional - Adult, Amateur - Adult, Senior High, Middle School, Grade School, and Kindergarten and Under. Of course there was a "Best in Show" award too. Visitors to the show were also given the opportunity to vote for "People's Choice".

Whether you are an artist or not, a show like this is fun. Artwork varied from paintings to sculptures, glass work to wood work, photography, mixed media, etc. There were art forms I hadn't even heard of.

The professional and amateur pieces were impressive. Spearfish students represented well in the senior high, middle school, and grade school categories. The kindergarten and under category was fun. It is amazing what some of these kids can do at such a young age.

As I wandered through the Matthews, eyeing each piece, I struggled to pick a favorite. There were so many great works. Some were beautiful. Some were edgy. Some were just plain interesting. I finally decided to cast my ballot for "People's Choice" for a gorgeous (what I would call) abstract painting. It was a tough choice though.

Whether you are a serious art critic or just looking for something to do on a lazy Saturday afternoon, the art show was truly something to be enjoyed by all.
