Downtown Spearfish

People don't seem to spend a lot of time downtown these days. We live in a society where convenience has become more important than the experience. Think about it. When was the last time you went shopping at unique boutiques and shops downtown versus going to a mall in a bigger city where everything is conveniently located in one building? I'm guilty of this as well but as I've spent some time exploring downtown Spearfish, I feel like I have been missing out.

For starters, those of you who have not seen historical downtown Spearfish, it is gorgeous. Only a little over a year ago, the city made the decision to improve their main street. It was worth it. Downtown Spearfish now features wide, colored sidewalks, vintage street lights, trees, garden areas, seating areas, a clock tower, and a fire pit. There are also a number of historical markers telling the stories of the historic buildings. The new additions along with the charm of the old buildings make downtown Spearfish an enjoyable place to just hang out.

Along with the curb appeal, downtown Spearfish offers some great shopping. As I said, until recently, I really had not spent a lot of time downtown. However, just a couple weeks ago, I spoke with a visitor who told me she was so excited to go shopping in Spearfish because of all the great things she had heard. I am completely guilty of being kind of a mallrat at times so I decided I should check out these downtown shops for myself. If you are looking for something artsy and different, you have to check out the West River Studio and the Spearfish Arts Center. Both offer an impressive collection of local art including paintings, sculptures, photography, jewelry, etc. West River Studio also offers a variety of art classes and workshops for you up and coming artists. If you are more of an adventurer, you definitely need to check out Base Camp Adventure Sports and Rushmore Mountain Sports. Dillon and Jesse are both very knowledgeable about outdoor sports in and around Spearfish and have a great selection of gear to choose from. For the ladies, Spearfish has some awesome boutiques. Pink 629, Kathleen's, La Mode, and Unique Boutique all have a wide selection of clothing, handbags, and jewelry. The Bridal Boutique also has you covered for formal attire. Looking for a good shoe? Stop in at Sole Perfection. Marcia will assist you in finding the perfect fit. Greenthread & Little Me is a hidden treasure. You are bound to find some steals at this consignment shop. Downtown Spearfish also has great antique stores, stop in at  Across The Pond, The Cellar Chics, or the Antique Mini Mall. If you are looking for a gift or for home decor, you must check out Wild Rose and Level Design Lounge. Downtown Spearfish also features an Ace Hardware, Radio Shack, Good Earth Natural Foods Store, RMS Jewelers, and Dakota Pawn. There is definitely something for everyone!

When you are done with your shopping, there are plenty of places to hangout downtown too. Grab a cup of coffee at Common Grounds or Coffee Corner. Looking to grab a bite to eat? The Bay Leaf Cafe is a local favorite. For a more relaxed environment, try Stadium Sports Grill or The Kickstand. If you are a wine connoisseur, you have to experience the chic atmosphere at  Level Design Lounge and Dolce Vino Lounge. While you are at Dolce Vino, you MUST  try their amazing cupcakes! They are to die for! If it is getting closer to nightfall, stick around. Downtown bars such as Back Porch B&B, Horses to Harleys, ZBar & Nightclub, and Flanagan's Irish Pub (just a block off Main Street) frequently offer live entertainment. The Matthews Opera House also offers some top of the line entertainment in a beautiful, historic building almost every weekend.

Like I said, if you have not experienced downtown Spearfish, you are missing out. Come do some shopping, grab a bite to eat, check out the entertainment, or just hang out and enjoy the atmosphere. Our Visitor Center is also located downtown, so stop in and say hi. If you are looking for an excuse to come to Main Street, the Spearfish Downtown Business Association will be hosting their Christmas Stroll and Holidazzle Light Parade on Saturday, December 8th. See you there!
