“LET ME WIN. BUT IF I CANNOT WIN, LET ME BRAVE IN THE ATTEMPT”
I was a director for South Dakota Special Olympics for a number of years while teaching Special Education at Wagner, South Dakota. I was able to help get the track/field area meet at our school and assist with the bowling area meets too. I also volunteered at the state equestrian meet in Huron. I cannot tell you how much this meant to me. Tears came to my eyes when I watched the wheelchair races or see the smiles on the athletes when they give their "all" in each event. These athletes take such pride in participating even when it may be very difficult for them to do so!
Special Olympics would not exist if it were not for all the volunteers. The volunteers help with coaching, assisting at the events (timers, etc.) and fundraising. Special Olympics of South Dakota hosts various events throughout the year. There are area equestrian, bowling, basketball, aquatics and spring field/track meets along with the state meets.
This is going to be an "exciting" year for me once again! I have retired from teaching and haven't participated in volunteering the past few years. This year the state summer games will be in Spearfish, South Dakota. It will be held on May 17-19 with volunteers needed on the 18th and 19th. The competition will include: Team Volleyball, Team Soccer, Aquatics, Powerlifting, Individual Soccer Skills, Race Walking and Track & Field. I am going to go and volunteer at the event. I am hoping you will choose to, also. If interested please contact Visit Spearfish, Inc. at 605-717-9295.
