An Excellent Place To Live

While I only lived in Spearfish for a few short years as a BHSU student, I can most definitely say that it is an excellent place to live or vacation. My favorite part about the town is the scenery; it’s breathtaking. The fall season in Spearfish was always my favorite. The colors are absolutely gorgeous. A hike up Spearfish Canyon during this time of year is a photographer’s paradise. Winter in Spearfish is also a good time for those scenic pictures. I know some people may differ with me on this, but I grew up in Colorado, so snow is a must wherever I live. I remember peeking out my window on snowy nights and feeling like I was right at home. Of course, I couldn’t write about Spearfish without mentioning the people. Whether it was lending a helping hand, or just saying hello, the people of Spearfish always put a smile on my face. There is nothing like a quaint little town with beautiful scenery, amazing weather, and wonderful people.

Hiking Spearfish Canyon

Spearfish Canyon is by far my favorite place to visit in Spearfish. I love it because I can combine my passion for hiking and photography. The canyon features Bridal Veil Falls, Spearfish Falls and Roughlock Falls that are all an easy hike or are right along the main road. The scenery is beautiful year round and most of my favorite photos displayed in my home are from the canyon. If you're more adventurous the Devil's Bathtub is also a great hike as long as you don't mind getting wet.

Spearfish City Park

My favorite place in Spearfish is Spearfish City Park. As someone who spends the majority of their time with children, the merits of the park are obvious. The playground is awesome, but there are many unique, educational opportunities for all ages offered there as well. Not only does being out in nature, alone, have much to teach us but having the opportunity to wander through the fish hatchery and the historic sites that are offered there is important for all ages. The walk up the steps on the sides of the fish hatchery offer a great mini-workout and an even better view of Spearfish. Weekly trips to the park are a must throughout the summer, which many people agree with and provides the opportunity to meet and greet many of Spearfish's visitors. There are also numerous events held in the park throughout the summers: the farmer's market on Saturdays and Art in the Park are two examples. Spearfish Park offers something for every age, and a visit there on a summer afternoon is hard to beat! And you can always finish it by enjoying a meal/snack/drink on the patio of the Spearfish Canyon Chophouse which isn't too far away!

Take Time To Play In Spearfish

Spearfish is the place to be!  You have the Spearfish Canyon Drive, waterfalls, DC Booth Historic Fish Hatchery, Matthews Opera House,  Black Hills  University plays, good eating establshments and available lodging/campground.  However, the one "thing" that I thnk is the greatest for the famly vacation is the Spearfish City Park.  I remember going to the park for my granddaughers 5th birthday.  Haidyn was so "excited" because she could do the monkey bars at the park.  The playground equipment was the "type" that the children could climb and play on for endless hours.   It is a clean facility with a picnic shelter and available restrooms.  If you are staying for a few days or taking time out to let the children enjoy running/playing stop in Spearfish!  Have a picnic and take pictures of the happy faces of the children as they enjoy the day.  TAKE TIME TO PLAY in SPEARFISH!
